10.1 Megapixel CMOS and DIGIC III

Class-leading performance and exceptional image quality are yours courtesy of a 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (approx. 22.2mm x 14.8mm) developed and manufactured by Canon. Through various refinements, this sensor ensures smooth gradations, a wide dynamic range, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. Enhanced light condensing efficiency allows a wide ISO range - from 100-1600 in 1/3-stop or whole-stop increments, plus selectable ISO 3200 - for matching shooting conditions and achieving clear photos even in dark settings when used in combination with camera shake compensation. The effective angle of view is approximately 1.6 times the focal length of Canon EF lenses. And sensor performance is fast, yet energy efficient, thanks to advanced 4-channel reading per line.

Analog signals generated by the CMOS sensor are swiftly digitized by Canon's state-of-the-art DIGIC III imaging processor. This 14-bit processor (16,384 tones) produces extremely fine gradations and natural color even during 6.5fps continuous shooting. Noise reduction can be activated for long exposures and high ISO speeds to produce even smoother shadows in low light conditions. Since JPEG images are derived from 14-bit image data their quality is exceptional, with less tonal skipping. 14-bit RAW/sRAW data can be saved as 16-bit TIFF images, using bundled Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, to maintain maximum quality.

Optional In-lens Image Stabilization

Canon IS lenses can significantly raise the quality of your images by reducing blur caused by shaky handheld shooting. The in-lens image stabilizers in these lenses offer two clear benefits over in-camera image stabilizers: higher correction efficiency and a more stable viewfinder image. Canon especially recommends the use of these lenses in shooting situations that are prone to camera shake, such as when shooting at low shutter speeds, taking handheld shots at telephoto settings, shooting evening/night scenery, and tracking moving subjects (panning). By reducing camera shake, Canon IS lenses expand your handheld shooting horizons and make high-quality photo shooting fun and easy.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

The EOS 40D incorporates various innovative measures to ensure that your photo results are nearly spotless. The infrared-absorbing glass over the low-pass filter, for example, has an anti-static surface that minimizes dust adhesion. A Self Cleaning Sensor Unit vibrates the filter to reduce clinging dust particles. Moreover, remaining dust can be detected and recorded as Dust Delete Data that is appended to your image. With the Dust Delete Function in bundled Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, you can reduce dust with ease.

High Speed 6.5 fps response

Quick camera response empowers you to capture every fleeting photo opportunity. When such moments arise, you can quickly start up the EOS 40D in only about 0.15 seconds. Then capture the scene at an impressive 6.5 frames per second in the continuous shooting mode, with up to 75 Large/Fine JPEG shots per burst. This speedy response was made possible by accelerated 4-channel reading and an optimized shooting sequence. You can also select a low-speed 3fps setting, depending on your needs. Response is further enhanced by a minimal shutter release time lag of 59ms. The shutter has a maximum speed of 1/8000 sec. and high speed X-sync at 1/250 sec.

Cross-type 9-point AF

Focusing is fast, accurate and easy in all shooting conditions thanks to a new improved AF sensor with 9 cross-type AF points and more precise AF detection. All 9 AF points feature a cross-type sensor for f/5.6 and allow both vertical and horizontal line sensitive focus detection for highly stable focusing. Detection performance is improved by a small sensor pitch, and the cross-type AF sensor at the center AF point is sensitive to vertical and horizontal lines at f/2.8. Accelerated sensor signal reading enables accurate focusing even during 6.5fps continuous shooting. When subjects are extremely defocused, two-line focusing with horizontal line sensitive sensors at the center reduces inconsistent focusing detection to allow quick, accurate AF control.

Live View Mode

Live View mode displays your images in real-time on the camera's LCD - directly from the CMOS sensor - almost exactly as they will appear in your photos. Such precision feedback greatly enhances your speed and efficiency when composing shots in studios or on location. Live View mode now includes convenient AF Shooting, which can be activated by simply pressing the AF-ON button. No image is displayed while the button is pressed. Once the button is released, the focused image is displayed and can be captured with a press of the shutter button. Live View mode also includes new Silent Shooting, which is made possible by an electronic 1st-curtain shutter on the CMOS sensor that enables shooting with the mechanical shutter completely open. Since there is no shutter cocking noise, operation is almost completely silent.

Bundled EOS Utilities also provides Remote Live View mode, which can display the scene in real-time on a computer monitor via wired (USB 2.0 Hi-Speed) or wireless connection (requires Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3/E3A).

New 0.95x viewfinder

The optimized viewfinder features approx. 0.95x magnification, a 22mm eyepoint*, a wide 26.4-degree viewing angle, and approx. 95% coverage. Large and clear, it makes viewing the scene extremely easy. Various information is also conveniently displayed. For example, ISO speed is displayed at all times, a B/W shooting indicator is displayed when appropriate, and the maximum number of exposures per burst is displayed in two digits. New Ef-series interchangeable focusing screens are optionally available.

3.0 Inch High-Resolution LCD

The bright 3-inch TFT liquid-crystal color monitor is designed for clear, easy viewing. Seven brightness levels make it highly adaptable to different shooting environments. At maximum brightness, for example, images are easy to view in highly lit outdoor settings. Uniform brightness over the entire 230,000-pixel screen and the wide 140-degree viewing angle allow clear observation from almost any angle in sunshine or shadow. Shooting information is clearly displayed and large text and menus simplify setting adjustment and selection. The LCD is also efficiently designed to consume minimum energy.

Compatible and Expandable

The EOS 40D is highly expandable and fully compatible with wide-ranging accessories and equipment. Images can quickly be transferred from the camera to your PC via Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3/E3A (IEEE 802.11b/g) or to hard drives and GPS equipment via USB 2.0 Hi-Speed. A Connection Wizard enables password-protected support in FTP, PTP, and HTTP communication modes.

The EOS 40D is also fully compatible with Canon's flagship Speedlite 580EX II, which offers leading-edge performance and allows flash settings to be manipulated from the camera's menu screen.

Various Accessories

Various options are available for expanding the capabilities of your EOS 40D. The dedicated BG-E2N high-capacity Battery Grip doubles the number of shots you can take before recharging the batteries. It also makes vertical shooting as easy as horizontal shooting. Sealed for increased resistance to dust and water, the grip accommodates two BP-511A Battery Packs and also supports AA batteries as an emergency option. A hand strap is available separately.

The EOS 40D is fully compatible with Canon's world-renowned lineup of EF lenses, including EF-S lenses. Engineered with micron precision and featuring sophisticated optics, these lenses are available in over 50 models ranging from 14mm ultra-wide-angle to 600mm super-telephoto. When mounted, EF lenses communicate f-number, focal length, and other data to the camera for fast, precise operation.

Three new interchangeable Ef-series focusing screens are available: the Ef-A Standard Precision Matte, Ef-D Precision Matte with Grid, and Ef-S Super Precision Matte, which offers easy determination of the precise point of sharpest focus during manual focusing and accurately displays background blur.

Software

Canon facilitates the workflow of professional photographers by providing various advanced computer software on the bundled EOS DIGITAL Solution Disk.

New improved Digital Photo Professional (DPP) enables high-speed processing, viewing, and editing of RAW images photographed with the EOS 40D. For example, you can develop and display images quickly on a computer screen, simultaneously convert RAW images into JPEG and TIFF images, drag & drop multiple thumbnails to desired locations for easy sorting, easily adjust images in real time using image adjustment functions accessible in the tool palette, and apply noise reduction to individual images. DPP supports sRAW images and images appended with aspect ratios or GPS data.

EOS Utility allows real-time viewing of images, via Remote Live View Mode, on your PC monitor. Controls are provided for displaying a grid, recomposing the shot, adjusting the focus, and making various other remote adjustments. These advanced capabilities give studio photographers, astrophotographers and others a number of options for meeting the demands of their profession.

New Picture Style Editor makes it easy to create and register personalized Picture Style files. You can create a new Picture Style by simply selecting an existing Picture Style (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, or Faithful), adjusting image parameters (color tone, saturation, contrast and sharpness), making minute adjustments to specific colors, and fine-tuning gamma characteristics (brightness and contrast). The new Picture Style can then be registered in your camera using EOS Utility. Once registered, you can apply it directly to captured JPEG photos or use bundled DPP or RAW Image Task to apply it to your RAW photos.

Canon EOS 40D Kit with EF-S 17-85mm IS USM Lens

This new EF-S lens brings true wide-angle to telephoto coverage to EOS 20D camera, EOS 30D camera, and Digital Rebel camera photographers. It features Canon’s Image Stabilization system, allowing safe hand-held photography at shutter speeds up to three steps slower than otherwise possible. And of course, it’s optically optimized for digital SLRs. A ring-type USM delivers fast and silent auto focus, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.

The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens provides a 5x zoom ratio and an angle of view equivalent to a 27-136mm lens on a 35mm camera. The new lens also uses a glass-molded aspherical lens element with aspherical surfaces on both sides for superb image quality throughout the entire zoom range and it features a closest focusing distance of 30 cm at all focal lengths. The EF-S 17-85mm IS lens is 5% shorter and 12% lighter than the EF 28-135mm IS lens and accepts 67mm filters.
